quick christmas chocolates

These chocolates are quick and really simple to make.

ingredients
200g/8oz plain or milk chocolate
75g/3oz dried cranberries
75g/3oz pecans

method
Bring a pan of water to the boil and place a heat proof bowl over it, making sure it doesn't touch the water. Break the chocolate into chunks place in the bowl and melt. You could melt the chocolate in a microwave (I don't have one so use this method).

Take the bowl off the pan and add the cranberries and pecans. Stir, making sure that the dry ingredients get fully coated with the chocolate.

Cover a baking tray with greaseproof paper and spoon out the mixture onto the tray into teaspoon sized rough circles.

Chill the chocolates so they become solid.

I packed the chocolates in jars with a paper doily over the lid.

As an alternative to cranberries and pecans you could use dates and walnuts or cherries and almonds.

Last week I ran a workshop with C.O.W (Creative Open Workshops) in their lovely studio making hand embroidered Scandinavian style baubles.

COOKIE ATTACK: DARK CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT COOKIES WITH MILK CHOCOLATE MIDDLES

These rascal-ish cookies are very simple to prepare and holiday-ish in flavour - peppermint = holiday, right? These cookies have a rich, fudgy consistency and are best eaten with a tall frosty glass of milk or hot tea. Or, bag these up in some sort of cute packaging and present as a holiday gift to a loved one, or co-worker! Cookies make a delightful homemade present! I love the contrast of the dark chocolate cookie with the milk chocolate middle, with that fudgy minty-ness. Quit asking people to choose which they like better! Dark? Milk? Why not both, in one cookie!?

CHOCOMINT COOKIES WITH MILK CHOCOLATE MIDDLES

Ingredients:

1 cup of unsalted butter, room temperature
1 3/4 cups of granulated sugar
2 eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon of pure peppermint extract
1 3/4 cups of all purpose flour
1 1/4 cup Dutch process cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon of salt
2 bars of nice fancy milk chocolate (or Lindt milk chocolate chunks - I used Lindt Piccoli "Extra Au Lait" couverture chocolate, but that might be too crazy fancy to find. Plus, how many names can one milk chocolate have? Piccoli, AND Extra Au Lait? AND couverture? seems crazy).

Make it!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cover two baking sheets with parchment paper (if so desired). Makes 2 dozen cookies.

1. Using a stand mixer or handheld beaters, cream the butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, like an angel's soft, cloudy bed!
2. Add the eggs one at a time until incorporated.
3. Add pure peppermint extract to combine.
4. In a medium bowl, sift the dry ingredients to combine.
5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until combined.
6. Using a small ice cream scoop or your clean bare hands, dole out 1 inch balls onto parchment-paper covered baking sheets, a dozen per sheet.
7. Break up your chocolate bars into nice little squares. Place a square in the middle of each ball and push down with your finger.
8. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes, depending on how hot your oven gets! Turn the pans once halfway through. Leave to cool on baking sheets for 10 minutes before transferring to cooling racks (or your mouth).

Rammerjammer these into your mouth (or daintily nibble away on one like a little cheese mouse) and enjoy!

Last week I bought the most beautiful constellation calendar from Little Bright Studio. It's silk-screened, silver ink on dark indigo blue paper – just lovely. A flurry of emails followed between Amy Nieto and I – and just like that, a simple and stunning collaboration.

It's a 7 x 11 print, on dark charcoal gray paper with gold ink. To make the metallic ink really shine, I underprint with two layers of opaque white followed by two layers of gold. (I printed these cards for Shanna Murray over the summer with the same technique – labor intensive for sure, but so amazing.) I'll be bringing the constellation prints to Sunday Best this Friday and Saturday or you can order them from my online shop right here.

Don't forget – tomorrow is the last day to use the 25% discount (code EQCCWN) in the shop. You can use that for everything but custom orders and Liam's Robot Tees. Keep in mind that because of my holiday schedule, the shop will close on December 13th – not so far off!

Hello to you poppytalk lovers,

Here are a few bits and pieces of our little studio.

*ouistitine, a little project created by a mother and daugther in the hopes to created eco-friendly toys for babies and kids that could not be found before. To do so, we use only reclaimed 100% pure wool sweaters that we upcycled in beautiful blankets, small animals and balls that children can enjoy. Every bit of our colorful material is used to create a piece that is as unique as the child who will receive it.

Wool in its nature absorbs and redistributes warmth, it breathes, it is alive and we think that every child deserves to benefit from the warmth and softness of such an item.

DIY Globe Garland

I create map and nautical chart pillows here at salt labs in Detroit, MI. It seems like a natural evolution for me to be making map pillows. Maps are part of my DNA. I almost can’t walk or drive anywhere without a mental map in my brain of the places I’m travelling to or from. I have to know the north, east, south and west of the place I’m in. In Michigan, one intuitively orients oneself by the surrounding bodies of water, our Great Lakes.

Over the past year, I’ve been on the craft show circuit, first locally, then regionally. I tended to prop my booth with all things map-related that I’ve collected over the years – vintage globes, educational maps, etc. For Chicago Renegade this fall, I needed a much more transportable solution and I realized paper garlands would be the perfect prop – light as the air that animates them.

Indirectly my daughter, Micha, was the inspiration for creating my map paper garlands. She and her buddy, Ben, were constantly making little oragami creations that filled the nooks and crannies of our home. When she returned home this summer, she taught me how to make the traditional water balloon or “bomb”, as it’s called. We spent our evenings together turning old maps into “globe” garlands.

At Renegade, people loved them. Everyone wanted to buy my props. In the end, though, what they really wanted was to know how to make them – everyone loves to craft. So the least I can do is share this neat, little DIY for creating your own garlanded world of little origami "globes".

1. start with a square of map paper (I used 5-inch squares for my garlands)

2. fold both ways diagonally (called valley folds in origami)

3. fold horizontally, then vertically (called mountain folds)

4. bring folds together as shown, like a 3-D pyramid

5. then flatten into a triangle

6. take bottom right corner up to the top, press fold with finger

7. repeat fold on left corner to the top

8. flip over and repeat process on the other side

9. fold side points of diamond to center

10. flip over and repeat on the other side

11. use a thin, wooden stick (or your little finger) to open the center pockets, tuck (or even double tuck) each top flap well into each center pocket, pressing flat with finger

12. repeat on the reverse side, again tucking the top flaps into the center pockets

(notice how flat the flaps are in the pockets)

13. gently pull at the sides to expand into the balloon shape

14. blow into the end with a hole to inflate...et voilà!

15. now make 50 of these (just kidding!) – the number depends on the length of garland you want

16. string the globes along a natural hemp twine 8" to 9" apart, double knotting before and after each placement to keep the globe in place.

DIY Nature Impressions Jewelry

This is a beautiful time of the year to be out in nature. Our family loves to go out hiking, be it in the forest, at the beach, along the creek or just down the street. And, inevitably, we come back with treasures. Rocks, leaves, nuts, bugs, shells, rusty metal, sticks. Lots of sticks. I could blame it on my boys who love to fill their pockets with any and everything but really I love it as much as they do.

After one such adventure, we came back with a collection of eucalyptus gum nuts.

What to do with all this treasure?!

Today I'm going to show you how I used the nuts as stamps to make clay jewelry. I use this same process to make the buttons for the scarves in my Etsy shop. This would make a fabulous holiday gift but it is also a great way to preserve special memories.

First thing to do is go collecting. Get outside! Collect a little something from your jaunt. Leaves, acorns, walnut shells, rocks, flowers, interesting twigs.

Next, take the clay and roll it out. Normally, I use clay that must be fired in a kiln but for this project I used air-dry clay. It is very light weight when it dries and you don't need access to a kiln.
Take your "treasure" and stamp it into the clay.

Cut around the stamped area in the shape of your choosing using a fine, sharp point. This could be a toothpick, a paper clip, or maybe even a small cookie cutter. If you are making it into a necklace, you may want to put a small hole through it with a straw or sharp object.

Let the clay dry and harden.

Now for the hard part...deciding what colors to paint it! Using acryllic paint, dip your finger into a little paint and brush over your print. This is a great way to show off the texture of your nature imprint.

Add a coat of clear acryllic spray to give it a little shine and seal the clay. Then make your accessory of choice. Glue on some earring backs or ring base or make a necklace!

And don’t forget to check out their olive oil soap that photographer Ana Maria is completely hooked on!

For those of you in London, why not make a day of it? Cheshire Street is full of independent shops filled with locally made goods and vintage products. Brick Lane is hopping on Sunday with food stalls, the Sunday UpMarket and it’s close proximity to the Columbia Road Flower Market and the Spitalfields Market.

Sharing a bit of Process by Heather Smith Jones of Blue Sparrow Press

This is Heather Smith Jones writing here today. Some of you may be familiar with my paintings, watercolor pieces, or my book Water Paper Paint, Exploring Creativity with Watercolor and Mixed Media. I would also like to introduce you to my new letterpress business Blue Sparrow Press. Plus I am happy to have a table in the current Mixed Tape Market here at Poppytalk Handmade Market showcasing my new work. Thank you Jan!

Today I am showing you a bit of process of how I made my most recent card, the Hello! airplane card. When I began this card I was actually intending to work on something else entirely. But this idea sidetracked me and sometimes you just have to follow your ideas, right? It was quite fun to make and now that it is finished I like the simplicity of the shapes, the greeting, and happy primary colors.

The propeller airplane, diagonal lines, and text are individual pieces of antique type from our collection. I test printed them on scrap paper to see what they looked like and then considered the overall design of how to put them together. While trying different colors, placement, etc. I determined the airplane needed puffy clouds to fly through. Not having any type like that, I made a collagraph plate for the cloud background then printed the letterpress layers on top. If you're not familiar with collagraph printmaking, it is essentially a collage type of relief printing.

Once I figured out the design, I set the type on the press for the individual runs. In letterpress, and many other printmaking methods, each color is a separate pass on the press. So I printed the cloud background on all the cards first and let them dry. Then I set the press with the airplane type and maker's mark, printed them in dark blue, and let them dry. The last pass on the card was the Hello! type in bright red. The final detail was printing the dark blue diagonal lines on the envelope. So this card and envelope set required four separate passes through the press, and incorporates a handmade collagraph plate with antique type. I printed a limited edition of 63 and they are available here at the Poppytalk Handmade Market. Do you know someone who could use a little cheer?

Summer came a bit early for me this year! With a trip to Maui in May, I found lots of inspiration for a new collection of thank you cards and notes for the Thank You Cards Shop - which you can see here. Being out of town for that week and a half truly made me feel light and inspired. One afternoon while we were driving through Maui, with fields and fields of sugar cane in the distance and the ocean not too far from view, I found myself daydreaming about new cards and notes inspired by turquoise waters, travel and pops of bright color.

Hi! I am Myrte and I draw birds for my label MirthQuake. In my collection there are pillows, dresses and of course the actual prints. It is my first time here on Poppytalk Handmade and my table is over here.

On this lovely spring day here in The Netherlands, I would like to show you a bit of how I work. Often when I tell people I work with a computer they think I have this trick to pop out a robin on my screen. I actually do not work very differently to anyone else who draws. Only the media that I use is different, but the technique has a lot of similarities. Here I would like to share with you some of the phases that my birds go through in being brought to life.

Phase 1: Research! I start with an encounter with a bird. I like to take a walk –where ever I am- and see what flies around me. I take simple snapshots and find out what bird it is I saw. I find out how they behave and what is special about them. They all have something special, even the dullest of birds. Then I decide on a lay-out. How do I want to portray this bird? And I start sketching. My wacom stylus is my pencil, and my screen is my paper. I draw lines just as I would with a pencil and paper.

Phase 2: The eyes! I now draw the eye. If this phase goes well, I am generally optimistic throughout the work. but if this one goes bad, takes too long or I just cannot seem to get it, then I tend to get a bit negative about the illustration. Think toddler tantrums and moody outbursts. If I think I have achieved what I wanted I am happy again. It is a happiness that makes up for being moody for 3 days. The head is not finished yet, but fine-tuning may happen later.

Phase 3: Feathers! The larger part of my technique is coloring the feathers. The way I work, an illustration may take up to 2-7 days. For instance my illustration of the blue jay has over 6000 pen strokes. But I spend a lot of time just looking at the bird and finding places that need work. I often check my sketch with the drawing to see if I am on the right path.

Phase 4: The background! I like to keep the backgrounds simple because the birds are so detailed. Sometimes I want the background to look like the bird’s habitat like with the Steller’s Jay. And other times I am lead by what color I think suits better on the pillowcase like with the chickadees. For a lot of my backgrounds I use watercolor. I like that it is subtle and transparent and still has texture.

DIY - handmade gift wrap in a flash

hi, i am nikki from BIRCHseed. i am going to share a quick & easy way to make some ooak sweet brown paper gift wrap, using a simple handmade stamp & some paint.

materials you will need to complete this project -

1. roll of brown parcel paper - or brown paper bags

2. stamp

3. paint & paint pad

4. some nice string or twine to add the finishing touch

5. good size table to print on

6. a nice long room to unroll your paper as you print so it can dry

7. an old towel to lay on the table under the paper

ok so let begin with designing & making a stamp to print with. because i am a blockprinter, in this project i used one of my handcarved lino-cut blocks...

if your up for the challenge to make one of these, you will need a few extra materials... i.e. lino, carving tools, mounting block, & a stamp design in your head. there are many great online video tutorials of how to carve lino on youtube, so i recommend heading over there & linking with one to get the basics. it is quite easy once you get going.

but for a simple stamp - grab yourself an apple from your fruit bowl and slice it in half from top to bottom with a good size kitchen knife. if you want the stem to be a part of the print as well, use a sharp pair of scissors & snip the stem in half lengthwise before you cut the apple with your kitchen knife. using an apple for your stamp will make the prints look more organic!

next get your stamp pad ready. i found these non toxic kids hand-painting stamp pads at a local store for around $3.00. if you can't find these, simple make one at home by placing a thin piece of foam onto a dinner plate and add some acrylic paint to evenly saturate the foam. but you don't want too overdo the paint (just enough, so that when you press your finger into the foam you can make a nice finger print onto the paper without smudge marks).

next you want to get your printing table ready. I wipe my table with a damp cloth and then smooth out the towel onto the table. this helps the towel to kind of stick to the table surface a bit. get your roll of paper and roll across the towel so you can start printing.

to ink up the stamp... simply press the apple or lino-cut block into your stamp pad a few times whilst checking the stamp surface. you want the paint to be evenly blotched over the entire raised surface, yet minimal paint any where else if you can help it. i tend not to worry about creating 'other' accidental marks, as i think this adds to the charm of this printing method. once your happy with your practice prints, think about what pattern (random is also good) & stamp away!

and keep stamping.... and stamping.... and stamping - but make sure you 're-ink' between each pressing if you want a bold even pattern like i have done. soon you will have beautiful printed brown paper strewn across your floor!

change colours if you want.... but make sure you wash your stamp in between colour changes (or swap to the other half of the apple, easy!)

and there you are... your very own way to make gift paper. this is a great activity to share with your kids... your could use so many other another veggie or things like leaves, or even jar lids will give some lovely circle patterns. imagine your own handmade christmas paper? after trying this project, & you become hooked.... you could then take it one step further & start printing on different surfaces - fabric, wood, t-shirts, walls, tea towels.......... the world of block-printing awaits you. enjoy!

A spring walk with Kanelstrand

And yet another day begins. A sunny white morning. I am in the forest. It is so early that even the swans are still floating in their frozen dreams. And it is quiet, so unearthly quiet. All human noise I have left behind, it is as distant as the past.

The ocean is tamed - surrounded by snow and pressed by the ice on top. Lazy ice, heavy, pushing down, squeaking under the sun's feet. And the ocean, that scary beast doesn't even dare to move, just lies beneath, like all breathing creatures around. I am the only one not breathing. I cannot, at the sight of all this, open my mouth and breathe for I am scared of ruining it, of waking up and realizing that I am not here and it will not last forever. I wouldn't breathe! I wouldn't make a noise!

I close my eyes against the sun. I don't need to look, I have it all in my mind now - the sound of early Scandinavian spring, the sparkles, the joy, the Blue Tits' songs that are melting the snow, the woodpeckers, the fish jumping high in the air to greet the sun and say: Hello Spring!

DIY : Print Your Own Fabric

Hello there, I am Karina from Maple Ash and Oak. Here I will show you a simple and inexpensive way to create your very own fabric pieces. No need for large screens, squeegees, and emulsion. Beautiful prints can be created with simple methods and materials. Most of the supplies are household items and the rest can be found at your local art or craft store.

What you will need:

*2-3 yards 1/4" Foam
*Fabric (for your prints and a cover cloth)
*Textile Inks (can be found at your local art store)
*Scotch Tape
*Markers
*T-pins or Sewing Pins
*Plastic Folders or Tray
*Scissors
*Exact o Knife
*Contact Paper (transparent)
*Containers
*Spatulas
*Iron
*Rubber Bands
*Stamps (optional)

Start by preparing your print space. I have a portable print table, but you can create your own with a little ingenuity. Cut off about a 9" strip of foam (save this for later). Take the larger piece and place it on your table, a fold out card table works best. Cut the foam in the shape of the table. Take your large cover cloth (make sure it doesnt have a textured weave) and place it over your foam and table. Secure each corner to the leg of the table by tying or taping, just make sure its tight (iron your cloth to make sure there are no wrinkles or folds).

Now you can take your fabric and pin it to your print table. In my samples I use a organic cotton muslin and a cotton/linen blend. Start by pinning the centers of each side and work your way to the corners. I space my pins about 5". Then tape each edge, covering your pins as well. I also used tape to divide my printing space into three quadrants.

Now comes the fun part... creating your designs! Get out your contact paper and start sketching. Bold shapes work great and are pretty easy to draw and cut out. Cut off a large piece of contact paper, about 12"x12" works well, and cut out your design using an exact o knife. Think of the contact paper as the stencil for your design. Save the shapes you cut out, you can use those as well!
I've been obsessing over triangles lately so here is one of my stencils:

After the paper is peeled from the contact paper place it on your fabric:

Now take out the extra piece of foam you set aside. Cut it into 4 - 5 square pieces. Fold the corners of the foam together and secure with a rubber band as shown below. These are your printing poofs.

Take out your textile pigments and mix as desired. I use little Tupperware containers and spatulas to mix my special colors. Pour out a little dab onto your plastic tray. Use your dauber, poofy as I call it, and dab until you have a consistent coating.

Place your contact paper (sticky side down) where desired on your fabric and start dabbing the ink.

I use the contact paper triangles I cut out from my design on the right to form a new pattern on my fabric on the left. Move your stencil around your fabric to create super awesome patterns.

Try different things like stamps, daubing through lace, and layering different stencils. Allow each print to dry in between layers.

I hand cut a rubber stamp and used it to create this repeating pattern.

In progress:

Play around with the thickness and texture created with your dauber.

Unpin fabric from your table and iron to heat set your pieces.

I love working with fabric, the possibilities are endless. Use your fabric to truly personalize your home with hand crafted pillows, tea towels, napkins, ect.

Or simply hang your new piece of artwork and enjoy.

In the spirit of giving your heart to another

MonkeyPuzzle is offering a Valentine giveaway.

These special heart pennants were originally designed for a mother who wanted her daughter, traveling overseas, to have a heart belonging to each of the loved ones who were keeping her in their hearts at home.

That first bunting is still traveling around the globe in her backpack and being brought out in each dwelling she occupies. I've continued to make them, and am happy to know that they occupy hospital rooms, nursing homes, kid's bedrooms, and living room walls. These are one of my favorite items to make for this very reason, especially when I have the stories in mind as I hand stitch the hearts.

Hot off the press, just in time for Valentine's Day!

My mother inspired me to create these new personalized knitting tags. She's an amazing knitter and seamstress, who's taught me everything I know. When she sends one of her knitted masterpieces, she often includes the wrapper from the skein of yarn as a reminder of how to care for the gift. Now she has a nice way to say she made the garment, as well as how to take care of it. And inside the tag is a place for her to write a personal message.

Welcome to my craft room! I'm Sarah Marguerite, and I thought that since you can see my artwork at my poppytalk table and my etsy store, you might want to see where I make it.

I do my printing on my vintage yellow formica table.

I keep my supplies on a foldable bookshelf, including ink, printmaking tools, and markers.

I bought this vintage orange container from an etsy seller and am hoping to collect additional interesting containers to store my supplies.

I made the purple bulletin board to be an inspiration board, but so far it holds mostly memories and photos. I really like to decorate with handmade artwork from fellow artists. I got the yellow "support your local craft brewery" at Chicago's Renegade Craft Fair in 2009 from Spudnik Press and the Chicago snow globe print is from 1canoe2. The "l'amour toujours" postcard is from ninainvorm on etsy.

I printed this sweet new valentine over the weekend. I hadn't planned on it, really, but I had the press inked with this new blue color – a sort of misty blue-green – and so I printed the tandem bike because I thought the little tiny hearts in dark red would go so well with it. Naomi Broudo here from Fresh Creations — A while back quite by accident, I discovered how to make real repeat patterns from the digital doodles and decorative artwork I was creating for my Ketubah designs. I soon became obsessed with this process and before long I realized, that like the Pointillist Georges Seurat, I could use my patterns as paint and create compositions by filling my drawings with my patterns.

Quaker Wedding Certificates

Quaker Wedding Certificates are a lovely tradition.

A couple's promises to each other take physical form as a beautiful certificate.

During the ceremony, the couple signs the certificate, and then those present share in the ceremony by signing as well.

Wedding Certificates offer complete flexibility of design and wording.

I worked with one couple whose invitation looked like this:

Using their colours, and incorporating a floral motif, I was able to design a certificate that echoed their original design, but with a touch more realism..

The unusual form of the cyclamen buds added interest (not to mention their leaves resemble hearts!)

The theme of another couple was a line from an old Crow Counting Rhyme:

One for sorrow, two for mirth,
Three for a wedding, four for a birth,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret not to be told.
Eight for heaven, nine for hell,
And ten for the devil's own sel'.

Their marriage ceremony was held on the open prairie, so crows and golden grass were themes of choice for their certificate.

EARTH & SKY // satsuma press + stone&honey

I am so excited to finally show you what I've been working on the past few weeks. Earth & Sky is a collaboration between Satsuma Press and Stone&Honey. You may recognize the feather from the birds of a feather cards late last year – with gorgeous calligraphy by Mara at neither snow. Teresa from Stone&Honey rendered it in silver – so delicately, so perfectly. We paired it with a tiny quartz crystal that floats freely between wire wraps. It's a beauty, really – such a good combination of, well, earth and sky. This project has been a dream – rapid fire emails back and forth full of ideas, a shared sense of aesthetic (and humor), everything coming together with such ease.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Naomi, and I am a Ketubah artist. Unless you are Jewish, you probably don’t know what a ketubah is. Literally translated a Ketubah is a “written thing.” If we dig a little deeper, a simple definition would be: a traditional Jewish marriage contract, which outlines the contractual responsibilities between the two partners.

Historically the Ketubah manuscript was prepared by a scribe, and illuminated with decorative motifs of the day. Today there are many artists like myself, who are rejuvenating the art of the ketubah, with both traditional and modern texts and designs, that are relevant for today’s discerning couples.

At Fresh Ketubah Design, I have developed my own interpretation of the modern Ketubah. As a designer, I like to play with the text and have it be an integral element in my designs. As an artist/illustrator, I am trying to push the envelope and come up with Ketubah artwork that will look as beautiful at your wedding as on the wall of your home.

I'm not sure about you, but I'm seeking out ways to keep warm, stay cozy, and be inspired in this gray and dark January! I've been doing a little knitting, drinking lots of tea and watching old movies like 'Dr. Zhivago' in the evenings after my little ones are tucked in bed. And I've been back in the studio, sitting down at the wheel to make some lovely ceramics to drink more tea or coffee out of. It's been a good way to start the new year off!
